东陵石又名“冬陵石”、“印度玉”，起初是指含铬云母的油绿石英岩，而现在地壳里一切色泽艳丽、质地致密坚韧的石英岩或次生石英都被称为东陵石。东陵石是一种具有砂金效应的石英岩，（东陵石的石英颗粒比较粗，其内所含的片状矿物相对较大，在阳光下片状矿物可呈现一种闪闪发光的砂金效应）。东陵石主要成分是二氧化硅，属于石英的一种，虽然有人将东陵石称之为东陵玉，但东陵石并不是玉石。除了石英，东陵石中另含有微量的蓝线石、矽线石、金红石、赤铁矿、锆石等矿物质杂质，因为含有的矿物质不同，东陵石的颜色也不同。含铬云母者呈现绿色，称为绿色东陵石（我国新疆产的绿色东陵石内含阳起石）；含蓝线石者呈蓝色，称为蓝色东陵石；含锂云母者呈紫色，称为紫色东陵石。此外，由于东陵石中还含有约10%-18%的铬云母，而铬云母又呈很细小（直径0.2-2毫米）的鳞片状，分布比较均匀，因而东陵石多呈鲜艳的油绿、碧绿色。
东陵石普遍拥有美丽的外观，鲜艳的油绿、碧绿色的色泽，加上强烈的油脂光泽和玻璃光泽，半透明至微透明状态，硬度7，但是比较脆，质地致密、细腻、坚韧、光洁。磨光之后，在油绿的底色上闪耀着光芒四射的小点（金红石、赤铁矿、铬云母等），显得异常美丽。这种小点俗称为“眼”，其小大约1毫米。优质东陵石往往“眼”多，且均匀地闪烁于油绿的底色上。
人们通常将东陵石的质量等级分为三级：
一级绿东陵石：鲜绿或浓绿色，油脂光泽强，半透明。质地致密、细腻、坚韧、光洁。无杂质、裂纹及其他任何缺陷。
二级绿东陵石：鲜绿色，油脂光泽强，微透明。质地致密、细腻、坚韧。有微量杂质或小杂斑，但无裂纹及其他缺陷。
三级绿东陵石：绿色，油脂光泽较强，微透明。质地致密、坚韧。有少量杂质、裂纹等缺陷。
总结一下就是颜色越绿，油脂光泽越强透明度越高，质地致密、细腻、坚韧、光洁杂质缺陷越少的东陵石越好。
印度是东陵石的主要产地，此外西班牙、前苏联、巴西、智利、美国、中国等国家也出产东陵石。 印度东陵石中的翠绿色品种有“印度翡翠”的美称，我国新疆出产的东陵石则被称为“新疆东陵石”。目前国内市场上最常见的是印度产的绿色东陵石，在放大镜下可以明显看到粗大的铬云母片，大致定向排列，滤色镜下略呈褐红色。
